Under the provisions of South Carolina's Freedom of Information Act, residents of Oconee County and other persons can apply to inspect, retrieve and copy public records held by government agencies. Oconee County residents who want to obtain vital records such as birth and death certificates can apply online, in person, by phone or by mail to the Vital Records Section of the South Carolina Department of Public Health.

Requesters can expect to pay a fee of $17 for a certified copy of a vital record. Additional copies requested on the same day will be processed at $3. Requesters must be subjects of a particular record to file a request, but their family members and legal representatives are equally eligible.
